INTEL ATOM

INTEL ATOM
Small but Powerful

How big is an MP3 player nowadays? MP3 players now are only as big as your ordinary wrist watch. Or how about a laptop that can fit regular folder because it is almost thin as paper? These advanced gadgets are supported by state-of-the-art microprocessors. They are called micro because they are smaller than small. They are those small black boxes that you can usually find in calculators, CPUs, and VCD/DVD players. One major name in this microposessor business is intel.

The lates update is that intel is launching its newest microprosessor codenamed Silverthorne. Commercially named Intel Atom, the chip is crammed with 47 million processors! Intel designed 2500 chips to fit on an area smaller than your fingership.

This chip is designed to support Mobile Internet Devices and simple, low-cost PCs. So, in the near future, you can expect smaller and lighter PCs or laptops. Intel Atom consumes less battery power, yet has more processing power. New products using this itsy bitsy processor are Acer Aspire Ultra-Mobile PC and Asustek Eee PC 901.

Intel atom is not without competition. NVIDIA released its Tegra line of processors in June 2008, which they claim is better than Atom, especially in performance and power consumption. Tergra uses a technology that is applied in handheld devices such as PDA and cellphones, and GPS tracking devices and game system such as Nintendo DS.

But how intel has announced that it will release intel atom’s next generation codenamen Pineview, in 2009. well, where this “war” is going, be prepared for small everyday devices thanks to those small chips.
